A Queen's Diary

How Did I Get Here?

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a famous artist or photographer.  I wanted a career where I would be in my own zone and worry about…me. What I was doing and where I was going in life.  I didn’t have many friends, and the friends I did have were well, mostly family.  So how did I get here?  How did I become the co-founder and member of a non-profit women’s mentoring organization whose mission is to inspire and mentor young girls and women through love?  I never planned to be a mentor, especially not one to girls and women.  I am beginning to realize that mentoring is more than just spending a few hours with someone to say you did it.  It is something that is in you, a part of you not something you plan on doing or becoming.

Mentoring is conveying the gained wisdom, experience, lessons and insights that I have learned in life, good and bad.  We as mentors have the responsibilities of being a guiding light, a beacon of hope for women and ourselves.  As a mentor my goal is to help young women understand their potential, their strong points and to also inspire and motivate them.  Being a great mentor was not on my wish list because I have come to realize that it takes an emotional commitment that is honestly much more challenging and important than parenting because of the relationship you build that helps teach both the mentee and mentor how to succeed and focus on the path to towards your goals.

We are all the sum of our own experiences. Self-reflection has helped me in bringing my experiences and the lessons learned to the light.  This light is what I am learning to use to bring added perspectives to the lives of the girls and women I are impacting daily through our mentoring relationships.

To help these women and girls better understand themselves, I had to personally reflect on the significant events in my life, my successes and my failures, the obstacles that I encountered and the lessons that learned along the way. By motivating, inspiring and loving these women in return I am getting just that and more which is something I've never dreamed of.  That is why I am here.

Life is always challenging, but we can always make a huge change if we will just dream. These dreams will give us that drive to continue in this world. We can also make the necessary sacrifices for us to have that life that we want. Life can be a little tricky, but we know that each fight will be worth it. We just need to keep on dreaming and keep that spirit that we have inside.
